We are lucky to have one legislator who listens to her constituents, studies the issues, and votes with compassion. Thank you Senator Schachtner. We know you’re voting for us today. The Senate will take up the budget tomorrow afternoon. As I read through the comparative summary of the governor's and Joint Finance Committee's proposals, I reflect on the countless meetings I have had with constituents. I spoke with mothers, students, teachers, construction workers, health care providers, and local officials, and throughout the process, I kept in my mind that a budget reflects our priorities.

Nutrition is a basic human need, and we need to ensure that students come into the classroom hungry to learn - not hungry for nutrition.

Currently, Wisconsin reimburses school breakfast at a rate of seven cents per meal, putting great strain on smaller, more rural, and poorer school districts. Governor Evers sought to double the reimbursement rate to 15 cents per meal, but that measure - like many - was deleted by the Joint Finance Committee.

Wisconsin trails the nation in offering school breakfast, and we have heard from school districts for a long time now that reimbursement continues to be a concern. While we all strive for children to grow up in safe, caring, and prosperous homes, we know that that is not always the reality. This is particularly true in the context of the meth and addiction crises impacting northern Wisconsin.

I have advocated for the fiscal benefits of proposals like Medicaid expansion, but sometimes, it's also important to focus on the human impact. The choices we make in Madison matter, and whatever we do, we must remember that behind the numbers are consequences for real people across Wisconsin.

She doesn’t support the Medicaid Expansion and is parroting the GOP line that education funding in the budget is “historic” which, when adjusted for inflation, is not the case, according to education activists. ...
